CT - Computed Tomography

Computed Tomography (CT) has undergone significant technical advancements since its introduction, none more so that in the last 10 years since the advent of multi slice technology. Due to these increases in technology as well as the advancing role of radiographers, the AIR has begun the implementation of a CT certification program. The program aims to recognise the significant additional skills, training and experience radiographers possess to ensure a safe, high quality CT examination for all patients.

The program will consist of 2 levels, the first being intermediate CT practitioner level. This level acknowledges the competencies and skill acquired during the National Professional Development Programme (NPDP) but wishes to value the new skills learnt during the first 2 to 5 years of clinical CT practice. It is expected that the NPDP graduate will have the acquired the abilities to develop appropriate protocols for basic CT examinations of the head, chest and abdomen. However extensive additional training and clinical experience in CT is required before a radiographer can competently perform the wide range of examinations routinely performed in most institutions. It is this additional training and experience that is to be recognised by the intermediate CT practitioner certification.

The second level within the CT certification program is the advanced CT practitioner level. This level is to distinguish those radiographers who have an advanced skill and knowledge base obtained after a number of years in CT practice. The advanced CT practitioner level certification is to be awarded in either general or cardiac imaging.

Currently the CT program is in the Pilot phase only.  Once this has concluded, further information will be made available to all practitioners.
