THE NICHOLAS OUTTERSIDE MEMORIAL TRUST
The above Trust Fund has been established by the Council of the Australian Institute of Radiography to be used and applied exclusively for the objects of the Trust as listed below.
Nicholas Outterside, the Inaugural President, received the Certificate of Incorporation of the Institute from the Governor of New South Wales, Sir John Northcott, on 8th February, 1950.
Born 1908 in the United Kingdom, Nick migrated to Australia with his parents in 1925. While waiting to take up a teaching appointment, he accepted a temporary position in the first Radiography department at the St. George Hospital Sydney in 1926. From that time Radiography and Nicholas Outterside became synonymous. His special ability and understanding towards his patients coupled with his mechanical expertise were appreciated by both Medical and Hospital Administrators.
In 1930 he reasoned that with the steady introduction of X-ray equipment throughout the nation there was a definite need to form a professional association for Radiographers. This became his main goal and from 1940 he was very active consolidating the Technical section of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Radiologists (A.N.Z.A.R.) in preparation for the inevitable separation of Radiologists and Radiographers.
Australian radiographers made the decision to form a National body in 1947. As its first President Nicholas Outterside cast the mould of a professional society that today is respected throughput the world. Indeed the Institute is a major participant in the affairs of the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technicians, and through that body to the World Health Organisation.
